Cameroon, a country rich in natural resources, faces a paradox when it comes to energy access. While it has significant hydropower potential and untapped renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, millions of Cameroonians still lack reliable access to electricity. According to the World Bank, nearly 40% of the populations mostly in rural areas lives without electricity, limiting their ability to access education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. This challenge is mirrored on a global scale, with over 700 million people worldwide living in energy poverty. In Cameroon, youth-led initiatives are driving the movement toward renewable energy solutions, contributing to a global push for sustainable development and equitable energy access.

In Cameroon, the energy sector relies heavily on hydropower, which accounts for approximately 70% of the country’s electricity generation. However, this dependence on hydropower has left the country vulnerable to climate change. Droughts and irregular rainfall patterns have led to reduced water levels in dams, resulting in frequent power outages. Meanwhile, in rural areas, many communities still rely on biomass such as firewood and charcoal for cooking and heating, which contributes to deforestation and indoor air pollution.

To address these challenges, young Cameroonians are taking innovative approaches to expand energy access. Youth-led startups and organizations are developing off-grid solar energy systems, bringing affordable and sustainable electricity to rural areas. For instance, initiatives such as the “Solar Village Project” have provided solar panels and lanterns to remote communities, allowing children to study at night and families to power small businesses. Additionally, some youth innovators are exploring the potential of biogas, using agricultural waste to generate clean cooking fuel and electricity.

The global push for renewable energy offers valuable lessons for Cameroon. Countries like Kenya have made significant progress in expanding access to electricity through investments in renewable energy, particularly geothermal and solar power. Inspired by such examples, Cameroonian youth advocates are calling for stronger government policies and international partnerships to scale up renewable energy projects. Social media campaigns like #GreenEnergyCameroon and #LightUpCameroon are amplifying their voices, raising awareness about the benefits of renewables and the urgency of transitioning away from fossil fuels.

Climate change further underscores the importance of renewable energy in Cameroon. Rising temperatures and erratic weather patterns have not only impacted hydropower generation but also increased the demand for sustainable energy solutions. Youth-led climate movements in Cameroon are closely linked to renewable energy advocacy, emphasizing the need to reduce carbon emissi
