[1-Minute Cut] Integration debate tests leadership… Residents skeptical of trust
[Cheonji Ilbo Jeonbuk=Reporter Kim Dong-hyun] The debate over integrating Jeonju and Wanju has reignited, but distrust among residents remains. Jeonbuk Province and Jeonju City accepted the “105 coexistence development plans” and pledged to legislate them, yet the atmosphere on the ground is cold due to fears of reduced welfare and transferred debt burdens.
Wanju residents voiced opposition, saying, “Jeonju is drowning in debt while Wanju provides ample benefits,” and, “If integration happens, current support will disappear.” Some merchants supported integration for school districts and business growth, but others warned of marginalization and the risk of unwanted facilities being relocated.
Opinion polls also showed opposition at around 70 percent, far outpacing support. Evaluations of political leadership are divided, and residents continue to point out a lack of trust in both the governor and the mayor. Ultimately, many stress that the success of integration depends less on institutional measures and more on restoring public trust.
