Across the US, police are responding to student-led demonstrations over the Israel-Hamas war. However, in the nation's capital, the encampment protest at George Washington University (GWU) has proven to be peaceful after nearly a week.

Law enforcement continues to observe from a respectful distance even while Republicans and the university president herself spoke out against the protest that entered a 6th day on Tuesday. The urban campus sits just a couple blocks away from the US State Department headquarters.

Students from other colleges around Washington DC have since joined the encampment. Dozens of tents now occupy University Yard, causing GWU president Ellen M. Granberg to cite the violation of policies including “an unauthorized use of university space” in a statement. Granberg said students are permitted to use “an appropriate place for their protest within the defined limits of free expression," however, she said the college does not allow students from other schools to “trespass” on GWU property.

Granberg's attempts to relocate the protest to an alternative site on campus were ignored, resulting in a call for assistance from DC Metropolitan Police — which declined to intervene.

Here is a look into the pro-Palestinian protest encampment at George Washington University.
