[Chun Ji-Ilbo = Jang Soo-kyung] Where is the end of the new K-pop history created by singer BTS (BTS)? BTS is the first Korean singer to top the Billboard main singles chart, "Hot 100." Foreign media are praising the new history of K-pop.

◆The first new English song since debut

Billboard posted an article on its official website on the 31st (local time) titled "The Top of their First Billboard Hot 100 with BTS, Dynamite," and reported the news of BTS's "Hot 100."

Hot 100 is a chart that aggregates the most popular songs in the U.S. every week, combining streaming performance, music sales and the number of radio broadcasts. According to Nielsen Music's tally, BTS's "Dinermite," which was released on the 21st of last month, recorded 33.9 million streams and 300,000 music sales in the first week.

"Dynamite" is BTS's first English digital single and is a disco pop genre familiar with the U.S. As people around the world are suffering from the recent outbreak of a new coronavirus infection (Corona 19), BTS performed the entire song in English for the first time since its debut to allow many people to listen to and enjoy the song.

◆High wall, K-pop pride high

Until now, "Billboard Hot 100" has been a high wall for Korean singers. In 2009, Wonder Girls ranked 76th with "Nobody," but only one week was off the charts. Psy, a singer who brought a global craze in 2012, also ranked second on the chart for seven consecutive weeks with "Gangnam Style," but failed to reach the top.

BTS first knocked on the door in 2017 when it ranked seventh in "Hot 100" with "DNA." Since then, it has shown the possibility of reaching the top with "Fake Love" in 2018 and eighth with "Boy With Luv" last year. Therefore, the No. 1 ranking in the Billboard Hot 100 is a great way to enhance K-pop's pride.

If Billboard's "Hot 100" is the chart that selects the most popular song, "Billboard 200" is the album chart ranked according to record sales.

BTS has also topped the Billboard 200 four times. Starting with "LOVE YOURSELF 轉 Tear" in May 2018, it topped the list four times in a row, including its fourth full-length album "MAP OF THE SOUL: 7" in February. This will also mark a new history of topping both Billboard charts.

Earlier, for the first time as a Korean singer, "BoA" ranked 127th on "Billboard 200," while Girls' Generation unit TATISER (Taeyeon, Tiffany, Seohyun) ranked 126th with its first album "Twinkle" in 2012. Big Bang ranked 150th with 'Alive'.

◆ Foreign media, a series of praise from stars

Foreign media are praising BTS for topping Billboard's "Hot 100."

"BTS has crossed the last remaining boundaries as a pop superstar," Forbes magazine said. "The success of Dynamite is tantamount to a paradigm shift in the way Western music listeners view non-permanent artists." "Without relying on cheap sales tactics, BTS beat Western contemporary artists," he added.

"It's making history," said Rolling Stone, a U.S. pop music magazine. "It's at its peak, proudly topping the Hot 100 chart." "K-pop band BTS is roaring as it reaches the top," Reuters said.

There are also congratulatory messages. Moon Jae-in, the president “Korean singer by Billboard ‘Hot 100’ the No. 1 spot and wrote new history of pop k” through his Facebook page, saying, " Really great. It's a great achievement that raises K-pop's pride. "Dinermite," which topped the list, is all the more meaningful as it is said to be a song made with a message of comfort and hope for people around the world who are struggling with Corona19.

Singer Psy said on Instagram, "Finally, I'm truly proud."

Popera tenor Lim Hyung-joo also wrote on his Twitter account, "Now it seems that the chart results are not enough to prove their value, but I am still prouder than words to say for this debut record on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart."
