한편, 현재 미국 내에서는 오바마 대통령의 노벨평화상 수상을 두고 논란이 일고 있다.
故 김대중 대통령은 한국인으로는 최초로 2000년 노벨평화상을 수상한 바 있다.

각하께서 노벨평화상 수상자로 결정되셨다는 소식을 접하고 기쁨을 금치 못하겠습니다. 평화를 사랑하는 모든 사람들과 함께 각하의 노벨평화상 수상에 진심어린 축하를 드립니다.
각하의 노벨평화상 수상은 갈등과 대립으로 갈라진 우리 지구촌에 평화와 공존의 시대를 여는 축복어린 선물입니다.
그동안 세계 무대에서 각하가 보여주신 빛나는 관용과 화해의 정신은 우리 모두의 염원인 핵무기 없는 세상, 전쟁의 비극이 없는 세계를 실현하는 길잡이가 될 것으로 확신합니다.
특히 지구촌 최후의 분단 지역인 한반도에도! 평화와 공동번영의 새로운 시대가 열리기를 열망하는 한국인들에게 각하의 탁월한 리더쉽과 평화를 향한 이상은 큰 희망을 안겨주고 있습니다.
비록 제 남편은 고인이 되셨지만 이 좋은 소식을 들으신다면 크게 기뻐할 것입니다.
다시 한 번 각하의 노벨평화상 수상을 축하드리며, 각하께 하나님의 은총이 함께 하시길 빕니다.

Words cannot express how delighted I was to hear of the news that you will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year. Together with all the peace-loving people in the world, I would like to extend my most sincere congratulations.
I have every confidence that your receiving the Nobel Peace Prize will usher in a new era of peace and coexistence in this world, which is torn with conflict and antagonism.
The exceptional spirit of cooperation and dialogue you have demonstrated on the world stage, I believe, will no doubt be the guiding torch to realizing a world free of nuclear weapons and the tragedy of war.
Your distinguished leadership and aspiration for peace has, in particular, given great hopes to Koreans who yearn for the establishment of peace and co-prosperity on the Korean peninsula, the last vestige of the Cold War.
Although my husband Kim Dae-jung passed away, he would be greatly happy if could hear of this good news.
Once again, I would like to congratulate you on this outstanding occasion.
